Game, set, match: 88-year-old Australian wins gold at seniors’ world championships

We always love a happy ending to a story, and regular readers may remember Byron Bay local Margaret Fisher’s recent bid to compete in the 2018 Super-Seniors World Team Championships in Croatia last month.

We’re pleased to report that Margaret has added two more international medals to her collection – a gold medal in the women’s singles consolation competition, and a bronze in the women’s doubles world championship.

Ranked number one in Australia for the 85-plus age group, the great-grandmother almost didn’t make it to the championships, but a $4,000 donation from aged care provider Feros Care ensured she could make the trip.

Although she picked up another gold this year, Margaret still hasn’t secured her coveted 85-plus women’s singles world championship – so she’s already planning to compete again next year.

“I’d love to be crowned the world champion so I’m not giving up on that dream,” she said.

We’re sure she will make it happen.
