No, seriously. Some local governments are trying to cut the rapidly increasing divorce rate by asking couples to take a quiz – know too much about your spouse and you might not be allowed to sever your union just yet.
The 15 questions include everything from anniversaries and favourite foods to household chores and family responsibilities and are scored on a scale of 100 points. A score over 60 is seen as “room for recovery” – and at least one couple has been denied a divorce based on their stellar scores.
Chinese officials say the quiz is designed to prevent “impulse divorces”. But as one social media user pointed out: “Divorce isn’t a case of amnesia.”
Personally we think some happily married couples might be considered to be on the rocks based on these questions:
- How long have you been going out? (Not sure, but feels like forever).
- How are the household chores divided? (Is this a joke? I do 99%!)
- And the killer: when are your mother- and father-in-law’s birthdays? (Save me now).
Still not everyone in China is trying to keep couples together – its popular WeChat instant messaging app is currently trialling a function that lets users make an appointment with their local divorce registration office.
There really is an app for everything.
