This warms your heart. A dad, 95, has moved in with his son at the same retirement village.

Harry Shaw followed his son Tony from England to New Zealand and now he has joined him at Ryman Healthcare’s newest village, Linda Jones in Flagstaff, northeast Hamilton.

Tony Shaw had moved into a Linda Jones village apartment last October and it was Ryman HealthCare Linda Jones Sales Advisor Sharon Tainui who came up with idea of moving dad into the same village. Harry Shaw had been living in Ryman Healthcare’s Hilda Ross Retirement Village, which is across the city, for 17 years.

It was still a big shift for the recently-widowed Harry Shaw.

“At first I wasn’t too keen because I have been here so long and had got settled,” he told Ryman Healthcare.

“But I think it will be very nice.”

In fact, Harry had given the seal of approval to his son’s choice of apartment in the new retirement village.

The idea of the two widowers living at Linda Jones soon took hold and now, with father and son both settled in, they are enjoying more time together.

Tony said he no longer needs to trek across town to bring Harry his crosswords – 17 a week no less – and the pair can keep an eye on each other more easily.

“We’re aiming for lunch three times a week at this stage,” grinned Tony.
