If you’ve ever had a road trip ruined by a flat tyre, you understand how incredibly frustrating (and expensive!) they can be – but now Michelin has an answer.
The famous tyre manufacturer has developed the new Unique Puncture-proof Tyre System (or ‘Uptis’ for short), a tyre that can’t go flat or blow out because it doesn’t rely on air at all.
Instead, the Uptis features a system of flexible spokes inside the tyre to support its structure.
Right now, Uptis is only a working prototype, set to be tested in some new car models later this year. But Michelin says it hopes the design will be commercially available by 2024 – five years from now.
Of course, the Uptis won’t be a complete fix for all your annoying tyre problems. Even though they can’t go flat, they’ll still be prone to wear-and-tear.
But I’d still feel a lot better on a road trip driving with four of these!
