A man with terminal cancer was allowed to see and touch his beloved wife one more time days before he died.
Danny Rowland planned to take his last breaths surrounded by his family in his home in Torbanlea, 279km north of Brisbane’s CBD. However, his wife of 60 years, Shirley, was being cared for in a nearby nursing home.
Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) posted on Facebook that Mr Rowland had accepted a conversation with his wife would be his last goodbye.
“Danny’s final stand appeared to unravel last weekend when a complication occurred with some equipment used to treat him,” QAS said.
“When no other solution could be found, paramedics Allan, Samantha and Joshua broke the news that Danny would have to be transported to hospital.
“True to their word, Allan and Samantha were returning Danny home when they overheard his inability to see Shirley. Realising Shirley was close to their route home, the officers sought permission for a brief detour.
“The end result was a touching moment the Rowland family and health staff won’t soon forget, as Danny and Shirley spent a final moment together. Danny sadly passed away several days later, comforted by the memory of holding his wife’s hand and a promise his love would last forever- a missing piece put into place thanks to an act of compassion, patience and humanity.”
This is so beautiful, let’s tell our loved ones our true feelings today.
