Only in America: Disney World reopens despite record coronavirus numbers

Florida’s Walt Disney World reopened its doors to the public this week, even as the state passed more than 300,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Two of the Orlando complex’s most popular parks, Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, reopened on Saturday after being closed since mid-March to curb the spread of the virus.

A range of social distancing measures were in place, including ground markings to indicate where people should stand and plexiglass line separators.

Disney’s chairman of parks Josh D’Amaro was confident the park could reopen safely.

“This is the new world that we’re operating in, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon,” Mr D’Amaro said on Saturday.

“I feel really good about our environment. We’re taking this seriously.”

In line at a busy theme park seems like the last place you’d want to be right now, even if the theme park is the “most magical place on earth”.
