Deeply saddened by the impact of the Australian bushfires, Bev Henry, a resident at Benetas Dalkeith Gardens’ in Traralgon has dedicated the last two weeks to sewing much-needed pouches for injured wildlife in Victoria’s East Gippsland.

A Gippsland local for over 55years Bev felt that sewing pouches was one way she could help.

“My hands still work, so I thought I’d put them to good use” she said.

And she certainly has – sewing 4 hours each day crafting wraps for bats and 25 tailored pouches for koalas, possums and sugar gliders.

No small feat for a 74 years old woman with rheumatoid arthritis.

Katrina Studd, Residential Manager at Dalkeith Gardens Aged Care said “many members of our team and community have been impacted in the fires. It’s great to know that in a crisis we come together and rally behind one another, despite age or restrictions. Even if that’s with a possum pouch!”

The wildlife pouches are taken to the local vet, where they are distributed to local animal relief.

A practising aged care physiotherapist for the past 13 years, Jill has worked in more than 50 metropolitan and regional aged care homes. She has also toured care facilities across the US and Africa. She is a passionate advocate for both the residents in aged care and the staff that serve them.
