Connecting carers this National Carers Week

0

Next week – 16-22 October – is the 30th annual National Carers Week, celebrating the 2.65 million people around Australia who care for and support friends and family.

If you’re caring for a loved one, you might not know of the support that’s available to you, such as the Carer Gateway – a Federal Government-funded program that provides services for carers including counselling, courses, peer support, respite care, short-term financial aid, and additional young carer assistance such as tutoring and driving lessons.

Sue Heins of Sydney’s Northern Beaches (pictured with her partner Nigel) says Carer Gateway has helped her a great deal in her caring journey.

“It’s always the person who doesn’t think they need help and should be able manage everything. I would say, just put that ego to one side and be absolutely honest with yourself.

“To actually speak to people who know that heart-wrenching part of caring for someone and watching the decline is amazing, life-changing. Someone needs to walk beside you so you can talk about that experience,” she said.

According to Danielle Ballantine, CEO of Your Side – an organisation that provides support through Carer Gateway – one in ten Australians is a carer, and the service offers them a valuable lifeline.

“Services like coaching through the Carer Gateway can help people to achieve personal goals such as study, exercise or understanding how to get access additional support. The counselling service really helps carers find balance in their role, and respite gives them the break they so often need.

“Carer Gateway is not means tested, so if you are – or know – a carer, then call the Carer Gateway today on 1800 422 737 and reach out for support so you don’t get carer burnout,” she said.

Thanks to all the carers out there for the amazing support you give to our most vulnerable Aussies.
