A chip bag that tells you you’re drunk?

It can then call an Uber for you? Sounds like science fiction – no, it’s real.

Snack company Frito-Lay developed the limited edition ‘Party Safe’ Tostitos bag for last week’s Super Bowl in the US.

The bags are not a breathalyzer – instead, they’re equipped with sensors that detect traces of alcohol on your breath. If the light on the bag flashes green, you’re good to go.

Over the limit? The light will flash red with the message ‘Don’t drink and drive’ along with a $10 discount code for Uber.

The bags are even fitted with near-field communications (NFC) so users can touch their phone to the bag to call Uber.

A potential lifesaver?

It sounds like a marketing stunt – and it is. But there’s a serious message too.

The bags were created in partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Uber in an effort to cut the number of drunk drivers on the road that night.

In 2015, 45 people were killed in drink driving accidents on the day of the Super Bowl, nearly half of all road fatalities that day.

In a video on the Tostitos’ Facebook page, a pro footballer tells how his aunt and uncle were killed by a drunk driver on their way home from a big game. It’s now hit over 4 million views – see it here.
