$4 a day for 5 years of work, is that fair compensation?

A Chinese divorce court has ordered a man to pay his ex-wife $7,700 for all of the housework she did during their five-year marriage, on top of raising their child, NBC News reported.

The court order stated the housework his ex-wife had completed kept the value of the property up which in turn meant she deserved some level of compensation for the years of physical labour.

The landmark ruling was the very first of its kind after China introduced a new Civil Code in January.

The ruling led to heated debate online but many were in support of strengthening gender rights and responsibilities.

Chinese divorce laws have undergone extensive reform in recent years as women are becoming more and more financially independent.

All is fair in love and war.
