It’s a remake of a video called ‘Understanding Brain and Behaviour’ made by Alzheimer’s Australia NSW in 2004 that has become their number one resource for families and carers.
Launched this week, the video ‘How dementia affects the brain and the person’ is designed to help people to better understand dementia, including how it progresses and its common forms, with its first copies to be given free to clients of Alzheimer’s Australia.
Help at hand
James Nelson, who features in the video, has been the full-time carer for his parents, both living with dementia, for three years, says he wanted to share his family’s experience to let other carers know they are not alone.
“I encourage anyone who is in the process of being diagnosed or has received a diagnosis to watch this DVD, in their own time, to allow for the enormity of the news to settle in,” Mr Nelson said.
The clip isn’t as straight-talking as the rest of the DVD, but it’s refreshing to see a video that tells it like it is – in the same situation, I know I’d want someone to be straight with me.
