No, it’s not a stunt. Domino’s stated in August they would be delivering pizza by drone in Australia within six months. In fact, they have just completed the world’s first drone delivery in New Zealand.
Posted on the company’s Facebook page, a video shows the drone, which was controlled using GPS navigation, hovering above the address before lowering the pizzas with a winch.
CEO Don Meij says it’s just the start for the chain, which has invested heavily in digital technology including satellite tracking and ‘zero-click’ ordering apps in recent years.
Pie (pizza) in the sky?
“We believe drone delivery will be an essential component of our pizza deliveries, so even more customers can receive the freshest, hottest pizza we can offer,” Mr Meij said. “[The drones] can avoid traffic congestion and traffic lights, and safely reduce the delivery time and distance by travelling directly to customers’ homes. This is the future.”
Australia’s first publicly-listed pizza company won’t reveal just how much they’ve spend on the technology, but they made a profit of $92 million last financial year.
It’s not such a surprise when you find out pizza is the number one takeaway food in Australia. It’s now got 34 per cent of the market, beating out Chinese, fish and chips and Thai.
Our humble sausage sanga clearly can’t compete.
