Californian man has his wallet returned after losing it in Antarctica 53 years ago

Imagine losing something important, and having it turn up over five decades later.

Incredible, right?

Okay, now imagine if you lost that thing at the southernmost tip of the globe.

That’s exactly what happened to retired American Navy meteorologist Paul Grisham, who had lost a wallet while stationed in Antarctica way back in 1968.

So you can imagine the 91-year-old’s surprise when the wallet was returned to him earlier this year.

“It brought back memories, oh yeah. I had dark brown hair at the time,” the 91-year-old said with a laugh.

Someone reportedly found Mr Grisham’s wallet while demolishing old buildings at McMurdo Station, including one he had lived in between 1967 and 1968.

Among the items in Mr Grisham’s wallets included a beer ration card (which still had 21 punches left), his motor vehicle operator’s license, and another card which had instructions for what to do in the event of nuclear war (a sign of the times!).

Mr Grisham says the wallet brings back great memories.

“The one thing that really made life worth living down there was the people that were there,” he said.

“We wintered 180 men and they were the most congenial, likable men that I ever had the pleasure to be around.”

What a nice story!
