Byron Bay property prices surge – because Aussies want to ‘perve’ on Thor

The coastal town is well-known as a celebrity hotspot – now realestate.com.au says its house prices are being driven up because we want to shack up next to Australian actor Chris Hemsworth and his brother Liam.

The pair – who are known for their not displeasing looks (and acting skill of course) – are regulars around the town and its January 2019 Property Outlook says the ‘Hemsworth Effect’ has boosted the Richmond-Byron Bay area to top spot with the highest price growth of any New South Wales region over the last quarter.

“There’s definitely jobs being created but it does seem to be that the area is attracting not just national attention but also international attention as well because there’s a lot of celebrity interest, particularly from the Hemsworths,” realestate.com.au chief economist Nerida Conisbee told news.com.au.

In fact, Byron had the fourth strongest increase in the country – big news when property prices are falling sharply in cities such as Sydney and Melbourne.

Of course, if you want to be neighbours with ‘Thor’ and his brother, you’ll still have to spend up big. Byron’s median house price is now $1.75 million – higher than most of Sydney. Nearby Brunswick Heads has hit a high of $1.45 million.

That said, we hear the views (ahem) are amazing.
