Baptistcare’s William Carey Court Residential Care in Busselton WA is bringing benefits for the young and “not so young” at their new intergenerational playgroup.
Natascha Gacia from Playgroup WA said “Baptistcare William Carey Court has a reputation in Busselton for being the most community-orientated residential care home in our town” adding that when they approached the aged care home with the idea of a playgroup – inspired by the ABC program – “ they were very welcoming and inclusive.“
Every Wednesday a group of 14 children ranging in age from 5 months to 5 years, and their carers, arrive armed with colourful leis, funny hats and scarves to ‘gift’ to residents before an enjoyable morning of singing, dancing, craft, cuddles and morning tea.
Roslyn McDonald, Lifestyle Coordinator at Baptistcare William Carey Court said “it’s wonderful to watch the interaction between the generations, with friendships formed and smiles all round as they help each with craft, sing songs together and encourage each other.”
“Residents are also using their fine motor skills with craft and employing different communication skills. They ask questions of the children and there are no expectations on either side” she added.
The residents, many of whom are in their nineties, join the children in favourite activities such as The Hokey-Pokey, imaginary tea parties and singing nursery rhymes, including Old MacDonald Had A Farm while the children hand out miniature toy animals.
“Everyone gains from the increased activity in dancing and singing,” Mrs Gacia said, including young mothers without family support who gain advice and love from experienced generations as well as the children, many of whom don’t have grandparents living nearby.
