British Airways is promising to make its flights a lot greener, with the venerable airline to begin using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in its fleet next year.
BA has inked a deal with a refinery in the north of England to supply the fuel, which is made from recycled cooking oil and other household wastes; according to CEO Sean Doyle, the airline is committed to powering 10 per cent of flights with SAF by 2030.
“The development of sustainable aviation fuel is a major focus for us and forms part of our commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 through a series of short-, medium- and long-term initiatives,” he said.
According to British Airways, SAF can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by more than 80% compared to traditional jet fuel.
And the best part is, once the plane has landed, they can use the leftover fuel to cook fish and chips!
(They absolutely cannot, and please don’t encourage our readers to cook fish and chips in jet fuel. –Ed.)
