The Bolton Clarke Research Institute (BCRI) has published its 2021 report, marking 20 years of research into caring for older Australians.

The report, accessible online, details BCRI’s research into health and wellbeing – including mental health – of older people, as well as social connections; areas include frailty, dementia, palliative care, and seniors living design.

According to Bolton Clarke Chairman Pat McIntosh, the in-house team of researchers with clinical experience have had a chance to shine over the past two years.

“The contribution and reputation of the Research Institute as a leader in championing positive ageing was recognised at the Royal Commission, where the team was called as expert witnesses and led the development of a paper on innovative models of care to inform the recommendations.

“The team also harnessed its expertise and fast-tracked its work on social isolation and loneliness in response to COVID-19 as these issues took on greater significance during the pandemic,” he said.

BCRI, led by Judy Lowthian, has produced 47 peer-reviewed publications over 2019-21, as well as 65 international, national and community research presentations; it has also participated in 36 research collaborations.

A practising aged care physiotherapist for the past 13 years, Jill has worked in more than 50 metropolitan and regional aged care homes. She has also toured care facilities across the US and Africa. She is a passionate advocate for both the residents in aged care and the staff that serve them.
