Blast from the past: bomb squad called in after WWII hand grenade found in NSW aged care home

Staff at Lutheran Aged Care in Albury would have had a very interesting shift early this week when they discovered an unexploded WWII hand grenade in a past resident’s room.

It’s believed the grenade was found by cleaners, who probably felt as though they’d stepped into a Rambo movie. Police were notified and the bomb squad were quickly called in.

“I came back before an hour ago and he said it was going to be closed for several hours,” Patricia Robinson, a nearby resident told 9News.

The site was closed from 10am and remained inaccessible for most of the day.

The item has reportedly been disposed of, which is good news, but its origins are no less confusing.

“These days it’s very, very unusual that people have inherited these from maybe a father or grandfather,” army veteran Graham Docksey said.

“Every time you find something like that you treat it like it was live and the first thing you do is make sure the area is safe, then you will call police who will subsequently call the Army bomb team.”

Sounds like good advice to us!
