Believe it or not, new and rare Australian beetles have been named after Pokemon

Yes, you read that right!

Three newly discovered Australian beetles are being named after the iconic cartoon characters after being discovered in the wild.

The three beetles were named after three ‘legendary’ Pokemon, Binburrum articuno was named after Articuno, Binburram moltres was named after Moltres and the Binburrum zapdos was named after Zapdos.

Quiet the mouthful!

Researcher Dr Darren Pollock said one of the exciting perks to discovering a new species was getting to name it and he chose Pokemon because his research partner was an ‘aspiring Pokemon’ trainer when he was a kid.

And because of the rarity of the species they discovered, primarily found in South Australia, his research partner suggested naming them after the three legendary winged Pokemon.

It could also be a clever way to attract more kids to the research, very smart!
