Bad news fellas: men urged to keep it to one drink a day

When you consider the year we’ve been having, sticking to one drink might be easier said than done. But new guidelines suggest you should call it a day after your first.

Especially if you’re a man.

The US has released new dietary guidelines recommending men consume no more than one alcoholic drink a day, down from the current recommendation of two.

This matches guidelines for women in the US.

And researchers believe there are significant health benefits.

“We looked at deaths from cancer, cardiovascular disease, and more than 60 alcohol-related conditions,” says Timothy Naimi, a physician and alcohol researcher at Boston University.

“Whatever kind of study you look at, two drinks a day is associated with a higher risk of death than drinking one drink a day. In the context of a health document, why would you endorse people drinking up to a level in which mortality increases?”

Maybe not the sort of news you’d raise a glass to, but something to think about.
