Aveo residents respond to Four Corners story: “this is the LIFE we have chosen, and we like it”

Last week we covered the Four Corners/Fairfax investigation into Aveo retirement villages that was aired on the ABC here.

This week, Aveo has responded – by running full-page newspaper ads featuring the people who really matter: the residents and their families.

Many have been incensed by the media coverage because they have chosen to move into a retirement village – and now they are being told that the choice they have made is wrong, as you can see below:

“The Freedom staff are outstanding. They have always been extremely professional and treated my parents with great kindness, respect and dignity. They have also been very supportive of our family. My mother passed away recently and was cared for by the Freedom staff until she died.”

Helen – Daughter of resident, Freedom Aged Care Bendigo , VIC.

“It’s not about what it costs when you leave, most of ‘us’ don’t intend to leave, this is the LIFE we have chosen, and we like it. I can only speak about The Domain because that has been my only experience of Aveo. We are very happy here every day. It is better than when we were not here.”

Barry – Resident, Aveo The Domain Country Club, QLD.

“The public is entitled to balanced reporting and the ABC allowed a program to go to air that was far from a balanced view. Yes, Aveo is a business and their profits are enormous but the services they provide for body, mind and spirit of older people in a safe environment, far outweigh the concerns about exit fees. The Durack community is made up of very interesting people who have lived full, creative lives, many in different parts of the world. ABC would do well to seek out some of these inspiring, uplifting stories to tell and there are many in the village. I believe the wider community, together with retirement village residents, are tired of having sensational, debilitating issues served up on almost a daily basis.”

Dorothy – Resident, Aveo Durack, QLD.
