What a load of carp – especially if you’ve got the fish-kissing proclivities of Rex Hunt!
The Australian Government is planning to use a strain of the herpes virus as a way to cut down on the population of carp flooding our waterways.
Carp is an introduced species in Australia and they’re a bit of an environmental menace, wreaking all sorts of havoc on our native fish and water plant life.
This is especially problematic in the Murray-Darling basin, where carp now comprise up to 90% of the fish biomass in the waterway.
CSIRO is still testing to make sure the virus poses no danger to the native species of fish in the waterways and considerable preparation is still needed before the virus is rolled out.
If it will restore the Murray-Darling basin to its former glory, we’re all for it.
You just might want to wait a second before you give a fish an open mouth kiss!
