ATO reveals weird tax time claims

0

A wedding reception, dental costs, childcare expenses and even Lego sets are some of the claims Australians have tried to get past the taxman.

Assistant Commissioner Karen Foat said claims in the “other “expenses category including non-allowable items were lodged by more than 700,000 taxpayers totalling almost $2 billion.

Ms Foat says, some of the claims are genuine mistakes but others are simply pushing the envelope, like dentist appointments because people think a nice smile is critical for their job

The incorrect claims range from a few hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars.

Since July 1 this year more than four million Australians have filed their tax returns, a 17% increase compared to the same time last year.

But one of the weirdest claims that did get filed was for a Lego set it wasn’t approved.
