Arcare Parkwood takes pride in its Rainbow Tick accreditation

It’s getting easier to be out and proud, even for older Australians. The proof? Just look at Arcare Parkwood, which has just received the Rainbow Tick as Queensland’s first LGBTIQ+ inclusive aged care residence.

Born out of the determination of Gold Coast local Trudi Murray, who had witnessed the heartbreaking experience of discrimination against an older relative in another facility, Arcare Parkwood was built from the ground up with the help of Trudi’s friend Ann Robilotta as a community that would welcome and support LGBTIQ+ residents and their needs.

Staff have been given Silver Rainbow training for LGBTIQ+ aged care awareness and have said they feel safe and supported in their own sexual identities as well, and the facility has engaged in community consultation including an advisory group.

According to Residence Manager Sue Falzon, the knowledge and experience provided by team members, residents, and families was invaluable to Arcare Parkwood’s Rainbow Tick accreditation.

“It’s been wonderful to see our community come together to achieve this. We believe it’s important to bring awareness and achieving the Rainbow Tick Accreditation sets Arcare Parkwood at the forefront of LGBTIQ+ inclusivity in the aged care sector,” she said.

It’s a fantastic cultural shift – and, for many Aussie seniors, one that’s been a long time coming.
