Donald Trump has stated he is “seriously thinking” of creating a military space branch during a meeting with the Army football team at the White House this week.
“You will be part of the five proud branches of the United States Armed Forces — Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and the Coast Guard. And we’re actually thinking of a sixth, and that would be the Space Force,” the US President said.
It’s not a new idea. Trump first spruiked the idea in March, saying “space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air and sea.”
The White House had put forward plans last year to set up a Space Corps as part of a wider national defence act, but it was dropped because of opposition from the Senate and Pentagon leaders who said it needed more study.
Now the Pentagon is actually conducting a review to decide if they should set up a separate space command.
Unsurprisingly a lot of people think the Government’s lost the plot.
That said, if it’s a choice between a space force and Trump winning the Nobel Peace Prize – beam us up Scotty.
