Only in America: US school arms its students against mass shootings – with buckets of rocks

0

Sad but true. A school superintendent in Pennsylvania has told a government education hearing on school safety that each classroom in his district is armed with a “go bucket”, a 19-litre bucket of river rocks.

“If an armed intruder attempts to gain entrance to any of our classrooms, they will face a classroom full of students armed with rocks. And they will be stoned,” David Helsel said.

“We have some people who have some pretty good arms. They can chuck some rocks pretty fast.”

Mr Helsel pointed out they do have emergency plans and other security equipment in place and the stones are only a “last resort”.

But understandably, social media users had a lot to say about the two-year-old policy.

This week the district increased armed security guards at its schools, saying the national attention had put them at risk.

We’d laugh if the gun control debate in the US wasn’t so deadly serious.

President Trump has signed two acts recently to tighten background checks and provide $50 million in funding to improve campus safety.

But will the White House crack down on gun control? Considering Trump spent most of the day of the recent March for Our Lives rally at his Florida golf club, we’d say no.
