Only in America: Trump says arming teachers could prevent school massacres

The US President made the suggestion, along with using armed former military personnel as security guards, while meeting with students and parents from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, where 17 students were killed in the US’s second-deadliest public school shooting last week.

“If you had a teacher … who was adept at firearms, it could very well end the attack very quickly,” he said.

“They’d go for special training and they would be there and you would no longer have a gun-free zone,” acknowledging the idea would be “controversial”.

Mr Trump says measures allowing airline pilots to carry and conceal guns show it could be a success. But are more guns in schools really the answer?

If the move goes ahead, it would also be a turn-around on a statement he made during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“It’s not going to be talk like it has been in the past,” he added.

That’s exactly what worries us.
