South Korea’s National Security Adviser has announced the US President and the North Korean Leader will meet by May this year to talk about a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula – a first-ever for the two countries.
Tensions between the US and North Korea have escalated in the past year over nuclear and missile testing – fuelled by a series of tweets by Trump.
“Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me ‘old’ when I would NEVER call him ‘short and fat’? Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend – and maybe someday that will happen!” he tweeted in November last year.
Trump also labelled Mr Kim “a madman who doesn’t mind starving or killing his people” (very subtle).
So will the talks defuse volatility in the region? North and South Korea have recently made efforts to renew diplomatic ties and other world leaders have expressed cautious optimism for the meeting.
Just as long as they don’t sit around comparing the size of their nuclear buttons.
