Scaling Mount Everest is no mean feat, but residents at Moran Sylvania have managed to achieve the equivalent of this in just two months.
What started as a simple idea to provide residents with a wellness program quickly morphed into something extraordinary – the Moran Sylvania Reach the Summit Challenge.
Onsite physiotherapists challenged the group to walk 8,850 metres, the same walking distance from Kathmandu to the Summit of Mount Everest.
“We hoped this challenge would inspire our residents no matter what their ability and that everyone could participate in some way, but we did not imagine for one minute the results, teamwork and fun we would have along the way,” said General Manager Lorraine Kelly.
And everyone got into the spirit.
Moran Sylvania’s physiotherapy team became Sherpa Dhan, Sherpa Vee and Sherpa Ben and the Australian Himalayan Foundation (AHF) donated Nepali posters, banners and decorations for the event.
The facility has a number of team members from Nepal so chefs even prepared traditional Nepali dishes including Momo’s (Nepalese meat dumplings), Nepali Curry and Khir (Nepali rice pudding).
On the 28th of July residents hit their target, and received a special video message of congratulations from AHF Ambassador George Hilary, Grandson of Sir Edmund Hillary, who, with Tenzing Norgay, were the first climbers to reach the summit in 1958.
It’s a huge effort, they should all be very proud!
