A real-life Lassie: dog’s bark saves Aussie man from drowning

Dogs really are man’s best friend.

A Sydney tradie has been rescued after a border collie dog raised the alarm that he had become stuck upside down in a septic tank as the waters rose below him.

The contractor, aged in his 40s, had been stuck for more than an hour in the tank at Terrey Hills, 25km north of Sydney’s CBD, when the dog – who was being walked by a 13-year-old girl – began to frantically bark and whimper at the edge of the tank.

The teenage girl called emergency services and threw a rope into the tank for the man to hold on to, while she waited for the crews to arrive.

The man was freed from the 2.3m deep tank using a rope hauling system after 40 minutes and taken to Northern Beaches Hospital, Frenchs Forest, in a stable condition.

“The man was unable to free himself and had stated that the water inside the tank was rising,” NSW Ambulance Inspector Charnan Kurth told The Daily Telegraph.

The dog, named Spot, was praised for saving the man from the scary ordeal.

“Had the dog not heard the man’s cries, it may not have been such a good ending,” Insp. Kurth added.

Good on you, Spot!
