Yes, this really happened. Lanhydrock National Trust in Cornwall last week posted a seemingly harmless ad for a Mother’s Day afternoon tea (March 9 for the UK) at the local servants’ hall on Facebook.
But the picture had a couple of scones spread with cream instead of jam first – and attracted around 300 complaints from locals who threatened to cancel their memberships and kicked off a heated debate on social media.
Traditionally Cornish scones have jam first and clotted cream on top, while Devon scones do cream first and jam on top.
“Those who put jam then cream on their scones are the same people who think the earth is flat & believe in the Loch Ness monster #creamfirst”, one person tweeted.
The Trust clearly has a sense of humour however, issuing a tongue-in-cheek apology for the “heinous mistake” and promising staff would sport #jamfirst badges in support of a “proper cream tea”.
Most of the UK – and the rest of the world – saw the lighter side of the drama too. As one commenter posted: “Don’t apologise, it still tastes the same – there are worse atrocities in the world.”
Exactly.
