87-year-old Perth village resident honoured with Commonwealth Games Baton Relay leg

A resident at National Lifestyle Villages’ Lake Joondalup Community, Margaret Cockman was cheered by around 50 family members and friends from the village as she carried the baton for her leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay in Wanneroo this week.

Walking along with the help of her ‘wheelie’, Margaret had been nominated for the Relay by Mayor Tracey Roberts for her considerable list of community services and says she was “overwhelmed” by the “awesome” experience.

“[Just the] emotion of having so many of my immediate family and two busloads plus more friends from LJLV there cheering me on,” she said.

And the secret to her non-stop energy?

Margaret credits her busy life in the village, which she moved into in 2001, with keeping her active.

“Since then I have enjoyed feeling secure amongst a new ‘family’ of friends who care and look after one another,” she said.

The perfect example of community keeping you young.
