A young girl had a slippery surprise when she went to retrieve her lunch this week and the snake moved across her hand.

A photo posted by Snake Catchers Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan & Gold Coast on Facebook shows the snake had moved into the smaller top pocket of the bag, which was (very) gently zipped closed by a teacher who moved it away from the children and put it in a staff-only area.

Snake catcher Lana Field, who was called in to retrieve the reptile, told the Brisbane Times it’s likely the young snake was “a bit out of its comfort zone” and decided to seek shelter in the dark bag.

It was later released into a wildlife corridor well away from the school.

According to the Australian Museum, red-bellied blacks are one of the least dangerous snakes we have in Australia, but their venom can still make you seriously ill.

But as one commenter on the post pointed out, it’s still “better than a Vegemite sandwich and a bruised apple”.
