Only in America: Trump says he’s met with the President of the Virgin Islands – doesn’t know it’s him

Speaking in the aftermath of the recent hurricanes that have devastated the area, Donald Trump mistakenly referred to the US Virgin Islands’ governor Kenneth Mapp as their President – even though he is the President of the US territory.

“I met with the President of the Virgin Islands, these are people that are incredible people. They suffered gravely and we’ll be there, we’re going to be there, we have really, it is not even a question of a choice,” he said.

The blunder was met with amusement on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Governor Mapp’s communications director wisely released this carefully worded statement:

“I would not want to in any way involve the governor of the Virgin Islands in any national dispute in the media about what the president knows about the relationship between the United States and the US Virgin Islands,” it read.

The White House later updated the official transcript of Mr Trump’s speech to say governor rather than President.

We don’t think the Internet will forget however.

It follows news that a Canadian man recently freed from five years as a Taliban hostage initially didn’t believe his captor when they told him that Donald Trump had been elected US President.

Yes, we still can’t believe it either.
