An Adelaide couple just have – splashing out on all 62 vintages of Australia’s most celebrated wine, Penfolds Bin 95 Grange.
John and Leanne Davison paid $230,000 plus a buyer’s premium for the bottles which range from the first rare 1951 vintage to the 2012 edition.
Mr Davison, a retired earthmoving contractor and keen wine collector, has reportedly been on the lookout for a complete set since missing out on one at auction 10 years ago.
But if you thought he’d be a fan of the famous drop then, you’d be wrong.
“I’ve drunk Grange once,” Mr Davison told The Australian. “I’m a keen cyclist and when I did the Three Peaks ride in Victoria a couple of years ago I took a bottle of 1998 and promised myself I’d drink it if I finished.”
So how was it? “I don’t really know,” he says. “I was so buggered after the ride I couldn’t really taste it.”
Instead, the collection will be sold again in 10 years’ time when their youngest grandchild turns 21 to “help out the grandkids.”
As long as they’re not tempted to drink the inheritance before then.
