85-year-old man sets out to become oldest person to climb Everest – again

Nepalese man Min Bahadur Sherchan is aiming to reclaim the title of oldest climber to scale the world’s tallest peak next month.

“It will be a message for everyone that age is no obstacle to achieving their dreams,” Mr Sherchan told Associated Press.

The grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather of six first climbed the 8,850-metre mountain in May 2008 aged 76, but his record was broken by 80-year-old Japanese man Yuichiro Miura in 2013.

Age no barrier

He has since had to cancel two more attempts, but is confident he will succeed this time.

“The only problem could be weather,” Mr Sherchan said, adding that he has no respiratory problems and his blood pressure is normal.

His other concern? The five kilograms he’s put on in the past few months.

If he regains the record, he says he plans to travel the world to campaign for world peace.

We wish him luck then.
