Espresso coffee, hot showers and movies on the big-screen – all while exploring our beautiful country? You can have it all.
Theo Whitmont, President of the Caravan & Camping Industry Association NSW joined us on our radio show last Sunday. He tells us there are now 600,000 registered RV’s (Recreational Vehicles) in Australia.
These range from your basic camper trailer right up to larger caravans and camper vans and finally the big motor homes and fifth wheelers.
These modern RV’s are a far cry from the classic caravans of old, with mod cons including fully equipped kitchens, ensuites, washing machines, air conditioning, espresso machines and even big-screen TVs.
Many are also solar powered so you can head outback without sacrificing your home comforts.
A home away from home
You do get what you pay for. A camper trailer will set you back about $10,000 while the top-of-the-line motorhomes can go for up to $200,000.
It sounds like a lot, but they are really are a home away from home. They also have a good re-sale value and for bargain hunters, there’s an excellent second-hand market.
Theo says it’s worthwhile checking out one of the 100 caravan shows and expos held throughout Australia every year.
“These give you an opportunity to compare across the market and get pricing,” he advises. “People do wait until those shows to purchase because they know that that’s the time to do it.”
I have to say we love going camping but as you get older, a little comfort goes a long way so it’s great advice for us would-be glampers.
