Why have women been allowed to join the world’s oldest golf club?

Women can now join the Muirfield Golf Club in Edinburgh, Scotland – 273 years after it started.

The Club did have the chance to allow women to become members in May last year – but only 64 per cent of its male members voted in favour, short of the two-thirds majority needed.

In response, golf’s governing body, The Royal & Ancient, banned the Club from hosting the British Open.

Unsurprisingly this week, when members voted again, 80.2 per cent supported the change.

We’re not sure they’re champions for women’s equality though.

The back down means the 71-hole course has now been reinstated as a venue for the Open – a potential windfall of £80 million for the Club.
