Have you ever looked up your symptoms on Google, only to find yourself convinced you’re about to die?
It’s common for us to turn to the web for health information and doctors have had enough. They’ve come up with a new program to stop people relying on Dr Google.
Called ‘Words for Wellbeing’, the Australian-first project will see patients recommended trusted books, websites and apps along with medication across the Ipswich region west of Brisbane.
‘Killing off’ Dr Google
Created by the West Moreton Hospital and Health Service (WMHHS), the list of resources was chosen by local doctors and mental health professionals, but are written in language that is easy to understand.
They will be available free through the region’s local council websites and libraries.
It’s already working in the UK, especially with anxiety, stress and depression.
It’s also the first project to include physical health resources, not just mental health ones, so people can learn about chronic conditions such as heart disease and kidney disease – and stop thinking they’re about to drop dead.
Sounds like a wise idea to us.
