Animal rights activists launch bid to change Tasmania’s Eggs and Bacon Bay – to vegan-friendly alternative name

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Australia has sent a letter to the local Mayor asking for the name of the beach, 50km south of Hobart, be re-named Apple and Cherry Bay.

Check out how crazy their thinking is.

Recipe for a heart attack?

The group argues the move would promote the local fruit industry as well as “healthy eating and kindness to animals”.

Citing a 2015 World Health Organisation report that classified processed meats – such as bacon – as carcinogenic to humans, PETA Australia Associate Director of Campaigns Ashley Fruno said: “Considering the high levels of cholesterol and saturated fat in both eggs and bacon, the area may as well be called ‘Heart Attack Bay’.”

The group have also offered to give out vegan apple pies to residents if the change does go through.

Eggs and bacon 2But it’s a suggestion that hasn’t proved palatable to locals or the Huon Valley Council, which says the Bay is actually named after the wildflowers that grow on its shores rather than the breakfast dish.

PETA has not ruled out asking for other name changes around the country either. But seriously, what’s next? Targeting Queensland’s Lamington National Park for promoting sugar? No thanks!
