Liechtenstein’s earthquake insurance salespeople are probably celebrating after two earthquakes struck the country’s parliament building – during a debate on whether earthquake insurance should be mandatory.
Sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria, Liechtenstein is the sixth smallest country in the world, measuring only 25km from end to end and with a population of just over 38,000.
Politicians were debating a bill for compulsory earthquake insurance in the tiny principality’s Landtag building (pictured) when two tremors hit within a minute of one another, the second forcing the evacuation of the MPs within.
The two tremors measured at 2.4 and 3.9 magnitude respectively, with the latter actually centred south of the city of Donbirn, in Austria. According to Euronews, the latter was felt not just in Liechtenstein but in Austria, Switzerland, and southern Germany.
Thankfully, Liechtenstein police reported that despite a “large number of calls from concerned citizens”, nobody was injured and no property was damaged.
We wonder if they passed the bill afterwards…
