Whiddon’s intergenerational art project brightens NSW town

An art project joining talents across generations has just opened its first gallery hosted by the Casino Community & Cultural Centre in northern NSW.

The Whiddon Casino intergenerational project started in 2018, with the aim of bringing together all parts of the local community. Working with First Nations Elders and internationally respected artists, 70 Casino residents aged from five to 95 shared stories and experiences while working together on the project.

“For older people, we know there is a strong connection between the arts and good health. This program provided a great sense of shared purpose for our community, enabled creative expression, and provided an opportunity to form great friendships between young and old,” said Whiddon’s Head of Strategy and Innovation, Karn Nelson.

“It had many benefits for the old and young participants. While we offer many of these types of programs at Whiddon, this was certainly our most ambitious one yet.”

The project proved a valuable learning experience, with more than 90 per cent of participants saying they learnt a great deal from their project buddies.

A wonderful way to add a splash of colour to the lives of young and old alike.
