Retirement villages have formed the backdrop for several hit books and television shows including the popular The Thursday Murder Club series of crime novels and the Australian TV comedy The End.
Now Gold Logie winning actor John Wood, most famous for his roles in Rafferty’s Rules and Blue Heelers, has written a new comedy, Home to Roost, set in a retirement village.
“It’s a bit fantastical and spiritual,” John, now 75, tells New Idea.
“It’s set in a retirement village originally set up by a comedian for ageing actors. We did a reading of it two weeks ago, and it was great. Everybody loved it.
“The good thing about ageing is I have all these people who have been friends for the past 50 years working in the industry.”
John said he was working with Lisa McCune (pictured with him in a 1999 episode) and Max Gillies, whom he starred with in Blue Heelers, as well as A Country Practice’s Shane Porteous and Kingswood Country’s Lex Marinos.
