At the age of 90, Athol Alcorn, who is legally blind, is entitled to be taking it easy.
However, the great-grandfather is always seeking a challenge.
His latest is to walk 300km from Kilkiven in QLD’s Burnett Valley to the city of Ipswich in the South East, to try to raise $15,000 for the state’s only children’s palliative and hospice care service, Wesley Mission Queensland’s Hummingbird House.
“By joining me in supporting Hummingbird House, you’re letting these families know that we care, and they are not alone,” he said.
“Family’s lives are taken up by the 24/7 responsibilities of caring for their baby, child or young person living with a life-limiting condition. Our support also means that they can access essential services like family support, a range of therapies, short respite breaks wherever they live in Queensland.”
In recent years, Athol has been volunteering at Hummingbird House carrying out any practical job that can help the rest of the staff as they care for young people who are living with a life-limiting condition.
His wonderful efforts have seen him pass the $15,000 mark, with $17,291 raised at the time of publication.
