Quick-thinking by a homeowner has stopped a thief’s getaway in unusual style.
Brendan Mills and his family returned to their home in Waterford West, a suburb in Logan, 21km south of Brisbane’s CBD, and were startled to see a woman inside their red Volkswagen Polo.
“We saw the car rolling, that means that someone was in the car that shouldn’t be in the car,” Brendan told Channel 7.
He asked the would-be thief to get out of the car, but they refused.
“I said ‘Well ok, you want to play it that way, I’ve got an alternative option here’.”
Brendan knew his forklift was nearby and decided to take action.
“I just went, ‘Well, there’s a forklift sitting there – why not?’”
He drove the forklift towards the car, lifted the vehicle off the ground and left it suspended in mid-air as he knew Queensland Police had been called.
When police officers arrived, Brendan gently lowered it to the ground and the woman was arrested.
They later discovered the 24-year-old woman had allegedly broken into their house. She has since been charged with burglary and unlawful use of a motor vehicle and will face court next month.
No word on what police thought of Brendan’s ‘citizen’s arrest’.
