Twitter adopts the democracy sausage for Aussie election hashtags

It’s become a symbol of Australian elections, big and small… and now, the humble democracy sausage is becoming the official symbol of the 2022 Federal Election on Twitter.

Hashtags on Twitter relating to the 21 May election – including #DemocracySausage, #SausageSizzle, #AusVotes2022, #AusVotes22, #AusVotes and #Auspol – will be labelled with the democracy sausage emoji starting this week, with the aim of raising more awareness around the election, especially among young people aged 18-24.

“The public conversation on Twitter is more important than ever during elections, with research showing more than one third of young Australians will get the majority of their political information from social media during the election campaign,” said Kara Hinesley, public policy director for Twitter Australia & New Zealand.

The social media giant is encouraging young people to enrol to vote and post their first-time experiences at the polls with the hashtag #MyFirstDemocracySausage – a move the Australian Electoral Commission is championing, says the AEC’s digital engagement director, Evan Ekin-Smyth.

“We’re thrilled to see this drive for young Australians to register to vote, share their #MyFirstDemocracySausage experience, and support Twitter’s broader efforts to elevate credible and reliable information on their service during this year’s Federal Election,” he said.

By the way, the rolls for the 21 May election close on Monday 18 April at 8pm – so if your details have changed since the last election, make sure to go to www.aec.gov.au/enrol and update them!
