The coolest job in the world – literally

So perhaps the King of Piel wasn’t the job for you, or you missed out on applying. Don’t worry, because The Donaldson Sisters has found another gig where you can get plenty of peace and quiet – and with all the penguins you can count!

The world’s most remote post office – at Port Lockroy on Goudier Island in Antarctica – is now accepting applications for base leader, shop manager and general assistant over its 2022-23 season. Working for the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT), successful applicants will be responsible for running the post office and its attached gift shop, looking after the museum, performing maintenance on the site, and counting the local Gentoo penguins.

“Given the nature of the day-to-day tasks involved to keep Port Lockroy running smoothly, we look for applicants that can bring a range of skills to the team such as retail experience, heritage, conservation, building maintenance, and leadership or management,” said Lauren Luscombe, UKAHT’s Antarctic operations manager.

Of course, there are some catches: no mobile reception or internet access means not much contact with the outside world, and no running water means you may go up to two weeks without a shower.

Still, the UKAHT says it gets hundreds of applications a year, so if you want to spend a few months counting penguins – and you have the right to work in the UK – you’d best get in quick and submit your resume here, because applications close 25 April.
