Only in America: 99-year-old WWII veteran to publish his third kids’ book

Remember budding eight-year-old author Dillon, who last year sneakily deposited his own “Crismis” book on the shelves of his local library?

Well, on the exact other end of the age spectrum, 99-year-old World War II veteran and Arizona native Sam Baker is about to release his third children’s book – which is not bad for a man who didn’t own a computer until he was 95.

“Most of us have a bucket list that we never have time to do, until life presents us with spare time, and that is what happened to me,” Sam told Military Families magazine.

“When I purchased my first computer, my son called and said, ‘Dad, now that you have a computer, why don’t you write down the stories you told us when we were kids, for your granddaughter?’ It was a perfect time and I wrote my first book.”

Sam’s first book, The Silly Adventures of Petunia and Herman the Worm in 2018, was followed up a couple of years later by Oscar the Mouse – and the retired US Marine is showing no signs of slowing down, with a third title promised by mid-2022.

“If my book can encourage children to become avid readers, I will feel that I have been a great success,” he said.

He’s already become one, if you ask us.
