Climate change could seriously mess up your breakfast

Do you like a smashed avo on toast with your morning coffee? Maybe some cashews on the side? Well, you’d best be ready for them to come from different parts of the world – or vanish entirely.

According to scientists at Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland, areas currently suitable for growing coffee – such as Brazil, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Colombia – will decline in suitability over coming decades as the climate shifts, with the same applying to crops such as cashews and avocados.

“The study presents the first global assessment of climate change impacts on cashew and avocado suitability.

“For both cashew and avocado, areas suitable for cultivation are expected to expand globally while in most main producing countries, the areas of highest suitability may decrease,” the researchers said.

Instead, regions such as the United States, Argentina, China, and East Africa may become better suited to growing crops like these, which will undoubtedly be a boon to the Chinese coffee and Argentinian avocado industries.

It just goes to show you how climate change is set to impact so many aspects of our lives – even ones as small as breakfast.
