Only in America: Exactly as fun as a truck full of monkeys

Bad news if you’re a fan of Jumanji – several monkeys that escaped from a crashed truck in Pennsylvania have all been recaptured, according to police.

The truck carrying 100 long-tailed macaques shipped to the US from Mauritius collided with a dump truck last Friday, giving a number of its passengers the chance to escape before reaching the CDC quarantine lab for which they were bound.

Locals were warned not to approach or try to catch the escaped monkeys if they saw one, with State Trooper Lauren Lesher saying this was “due to it not being a domesticated animal and them being in an unknown territory.

“It is hard to say how they would react to a human approaching them,” she told the Associated Press.

Long-tailed macaques are often used in animal testing, as they have similar immune, neurological, and reproductive systems to humans, and have been in demand for coronavirus research. Given that, we can’t really blame them for making a bid for freedom…
